Galactic Civilizations III keeps getting better. Additional content has been made available since the game's release. All expansions and other downloadable content (DLC) require Galactic Civilizations III (sold separately) to play.

Expansions

{{SectionTemplate |h=h2 |title=Retribution |content= What started as a crusade has become a war of retribution.

Across the galaxy, ancient alien artifacts are being discovered, giving civilizations powerful new capabilities. Meanwhile, as civilizations try to carefully balance building an economy, funding an ever growing war machine, and engaging in diplomacy, the humans of Sol III have invented a game-changing new technology - Hypergates - which, when connected, allow for rapid transit across the galaxy.

With two new major civilizations and the concluding campaign to the Galactic Civilizations III backstory that serves this massive space 4X sandbox game, Retribution asks the question: How will you rule your galaxy?

  • Artifacts
Powerful items buried on planets across the galaxy will give your civilization instant-access to new abilities.
  • Hypergates
Construct powerful gateways that, when linked, allow your fleets to travel even faster across hyperspace.
  • New Major Civilizations
The Drath and the Korath are back! The manipulative Drath pull the strings across the galaxy while the Korath rely on extermination. Each has its own set of special abilities, bonuses, and ship parts.
  • Cargo ships
No longer do your planets act just as islands in space. Cargo ships can be constructed to deliver goods and services to your other planets to aid in their development.
  • New Technology Tree
A top to bottom overhaul of the technology tree adds depth and sharpens the strategic choices in your research options.
  • Retribution Campaign
The climactic final battle players have been waiting for. The malevolent Drengin Empire thought humans were soft and peace-loving. They made a terrible mistake that may now end in their extinction.

{{SectionTemplate |h=h2 |title=Intrigue |content= Assemble your cabinet of advisors, choose a form of government, and earn the trust and faith of your people. Politics are here on a galactic scale in Galactic Civilizations III: Intrigue!

One enormous galaxy to explore. Thousands of planets ripe for settling. Hundreds of colonies looking for leadership: you.

  • Choose your form of Government
Rule with a gentle touch - or with an iron fist! You can rule democratically, but keep the favour of your people so you don’t lose the next election. Or, you could adopt an Owner Aristocracy to enslave your working class. There's also an Interstellar Plutocracy that allows your corporations to rule.
  • Establish a Commonwealth
Put your colonies on a path to self-sufficiency! As your empire grows, worlds on the outskirts will want to become independent. By granting these worlds a status of commonwealth, they'll be converted into an ally who will implement your requests on the galactic scene, as well as provide a substantial stipend back to your home civilization.
  • Trade on the Galactic Market
There’s (almost) always a good deal at the market! Sell Durantium before extensive mining drives down the price, or pay a premium to get some Elerium to construct that new prototype flagship you’ve been wanting. How steep the price gets depends entirely on how much is (or isn’t) available, so buy and sell with care!
  • Guide your civilization through major crises
Choose your own adventure! Special crises events can pop up and throw a wrench into your plans for your civilization. You might have to quell a group of violent revolutionaries, or rally your forces against a massive space creature. How you decide to handle each situation affects events, options, opportunities, and rewards.
  • Keep up with current events using the Galactic News Network
Be prepared for anything! From famine to protests, you’ll face new events that challenge your leadership and test your people. Certain governments and crises will award you with brand new ships that can’t be obtained through any other means. Your choices determine your path and what rewards and penalties you’ll have to deal with, so choose wisely.

{{SectionTemplate |h=h2 |title=Crusade |content= The shield around Earth has been eliminated, but humanity has been anything but idle. Furious that their attempts at diplomacy and goodwill were met with treachery and violence, Earth has turned to its most valuable asset: its people. From spies trained in espionage to soldiers ready to invade enemy planets, the galaxy is ready for a crusade.

  • Galactic Citizens
Shape the course of your civilization’s destiny with talented individuals called citizens. Choose from over a dozen unique roles - admiral, engineer, celebrity, pioneer, and more - to help your civilizations flourish. Keep your citizen on their homeworld or send them off through dangerous interstellar travel in order to help the colonies on new worlds you’ve conquered.
  • Invasions
Conquering a world is no small task. The revamped invasion system in Crusade allows a citizen to be trained as a soldier in order to invade worlds. Strategic and challenging, invasions will require careful planning as you train your legions and determine which tile to attack first. Be careful not to forget to defend your own worlds from your enemies, too!
  • Espionage
Smaller civilizations can keep up with their larger counterparts by training their citizens in the art of espionage. Spies can steal technologies, circulate rumors to create civil unrest, sabotage enemy worlds, or even go so far as to assassinate enemy citizens to keep their edge above the competition.
  • Civilization Builder
Create a custom faction complete with leader, ideology, and abilities. You can also customize your own galactic navy and create unique conversation dialogue for your faction to use when it comes into contact with friends and enemies. The civilization builder is integrated into Steam Workshop so that you can upload your creation for other users to enjoy!
  • New Races and Civilizations
Meet the members of the Terran Resistance, lurk deep within the bowels of the living rock of asteroids as the new Onyx Hive faction, or look down on other primitive races as the cybernetic space amoebas, the Slyne.
  • Even more new content and features!
Hire a slew of brand new mercenaries, build your own custom starbases, and stay on your toes and be ready to make important choices during new galactic and United Planet events. Enjoy a sleek new UI and explore the reworked tech tree system, which is now more accessible for modders.

{{SectionTemplate |h=h2 |title=Mercenaries |content= The human race is fighting a desperate war against the remorseless Drengin Empire. Both sides have become increasingly desperate, leading them to turn to the galactic underworld and their elite mercenaries.

  • Galactic Bazaar
Visit the Galactic Bazaar and choose from dozens of mercenaries for hire and order them to do your bidding.
  • New Ships / Ship Parts
Tons of new ships and dozens of new ship parts for further customization.
  • New Faction - Torians
Play as an aquatic species who seek to escape the slavery of the Drengin Empire.
  • New Campaign
Hire mercenaries and lead the Torians to freedom from their Drengin oppressors. Rebuild your shattered empire from the ground up and thrive in the face of adversity.
  • New Faction - Arceans
Play as an ancient and honorable civilization of warriors and long-time enemy of the Drengin Empire.
